The Beginner’s Guide to Tribes
What Should I Know About the Piqua Shawnee Tribe?
As of now, there are nine different indigenous tribes that are recognized in Alabama by the Alabama Indian Affairs Commission. Within these nine tribes, the Piqua Shawnee tribe exists. This is a tribe that has existed in parts of what is currently Alabama for hundreds of years now and evidence can be found of this tribe all the way back to what would be the 17th century. In Alabama, a lot of people have been able to learn more about this specific tribe due to the fact that they have such a large presence within this community. Within this article, you will be able to learn more about what the Piqua Shawnee tribe has done and how they have been able to affect others.
The Shawnee tribe was originally from the same area that Indiana and Ohio exist today. The Piqua section of the Shawnee tribe was one of five divisions and this specific division was named because of the legend of an evil man that died and came back to help a group of Shawnee members walk in harmony together. Coming out of their fire through their smoke, this man would appear in front of the Shawnee people as a man that came back from being dead.
After some time, these people were forced to disperse due to the fact that other tribes wanted what they had. Some of the members of the tribe that scattered were able to land in the current state of Alabama. In this new area, the Piqua Shawnee were able to live among many of the other tribes that were already there. Many of the traders that came through this area assumed they were all one big tribe because of how they did get along. During the wars that would follow this time period, another group of Shawnee arrived and the tribe in this area grew. As years went by, the Shawnee Picqua tribe started to grow more and more and gain more members than ever before.
Some of the historians think that the people in the Shawnee tribe have possibly lived in Alabama longer than any other place. There is evidence that archaeologists have found that show evidence proving the idea that the Shawnee tribe lived in this area since the late 1600s, which is quite a long time and longer than many other tribes.
There are many people that are descendants of this tribe that still live in Alabama. Many families within the tribe ended up in different areas of the country, however, due to political policies that would come about later during the Andrew Jackson administration. There is a lot of information about the tribe that is irretrievable due to this change in population for the tribe, but there is still plenty of information out there for people to learn about this tribe.
